Plumbing DIY- Stop a Noisy Toilet

Plumbing DIY knows there are probably a few of you who have a problem with noisy toilets. So, I took the problem into to my own hands to do the research for you.

Before you do anything shut off the water.  There is a valve coming out of the wall behind the toilet. Turn the handle counter clockwise until it stops.

The first thing to check is if there is restricted water flow. Check and see if your hose (connecting from that valve on the wall to the toilet) is kinked. If it is, unkink it.

If not, maybe you have a defective ball cock assembly. A ball cock is the object in the tank that has the ball float attached to it. The ball float is the horizontal bar with a plastic ball at the end. How it works is when the ball float reaches a certain level the water will shut off.

Try adjusting the shut off valve. The shut off valve is a screw which is located on top of the ball cock. Turn that counter clockwise about half a turn.

If it’s still making noise, oil the trip lever. This is the end of the ball float that doesn’t have the ball. If there is still no success replace the entire ball cock assembly.

Plumbing DIY- Unclogging a Toilet

Plumbing DIY will tell you unclogging a toilet is a nasty but necessary job. Sometimes a plunger will work, but if not, try a closet auger. Since toilets usually clog in the built in trap of the fixture, a closet auger will work well because it only has about 3 feet of cable.

Place the auger in the toilet with the upturned tip going into the drain and push down as you turn the crank to the right. After you feel the cable snake winding through the trap and you have pushed all the cable through, crank to the left and pull it back out.

Try flushing the toilet. If it is still slow you might need to repeat. You can turn the tool to work the cable more to the right or more to the left to try to work out all of a big clog.
